New California Building Codes Effective January 1, 2023 The Martinez Building Inspection Division will switch from enforcing the 2019 California set of Codes to the 2022 editions adopted by the State. All construction projects submitted after that date must comply with the 2022 editions. The complete list of California Codes can be found in the Martinez Municipal Code, Chapter 15. Building Permits The Building Department issues building permits to homeowners and licensed contractors to regulate construction within the City limits. We work closely with the Planning and Engineering Divisions to help maintain a small-town feeling while ensuring that modern-day building safety requirements are met. All contractors must have a current business license before permits are issued. Apply/renew a business license online. Monday - Friday: 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. These codes are followed not only to protect your health and safety, but that of your property investment as well. If improvements have been made to your home, evidence of a building permit and final inspection of the work is often necessary to obtain financing or sell your property.
